What is Vaginal Steaming, Yoni Steaming or Womb Steaming?

Rachael CrowMenstrual Health

Dr. Rosita Arvigo, a naturopathic physician, herbalist, international lecturer, author and teacher of Maya medicine has brought back this ancient practice to modern women. She lived and studied with traditional Mayan healers in Belize for nearly 25 years, and shares that vaginal steaming is very common among women because it works.
Yoni steaming has been known by women throughout history to:
Significantly reduce discomfort, bloating and exhaustion associated with your Moontime
Ease menstrual cramps
Decrease menstrual flow as well as reduce dark purple or brown blood at the onset or end of menses
Regulate irregular or absent menstrual cycles
Increase fertility, especially when combined with Mayan abdominal massage
Speed healing and tone the reproductive system after birth
Treat uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, uterine weakness and uterine prolapse
Assist with the healing of haemorrhoids
Treat chronic vaginal/yeast infections, and maintain healthy odour
Relieve symptoms of menopause

It’s super easy for you to do a vaginal steam at home. Steep approximately 1 heaping cup of steaming herbs in a basin of hot water, find a quiet place to relax, undress from the waist down, and the steam your yoni for 20 minutes or so. Many women pop the basin over the toilet, and sit on the toilet seat, you could cut a hole in an old camping chair- be sure the bowl is on some books or something to make them high enough so you feel the steam, be creative and see how you could be comfy hovering over the bowl! I used to use a large bowl, roll up a towel to make a ‘seat’ on the edge of the bowl and sit for 10 mins or so.
Now I have made a “Steam Throne” from a broken toilet seat, screwed onto some legs and I make a comfy seat from a rolled towel!

Be sure the water isn’t too hot, so as to avoid burns!! Stay wrapped in warm blankets as you sit. This is a great time to write in a journal, meditate or set some intentions!

Once the time has passed, remain wrapped in blankets and lie down in a warm bed for the night. The herbs will continue to work on your reproductive system as you sleep, and you’ll wake up feeling healed and nurtured.

The tissues of the vagina are exceptionally porous and absorbent, and the warmth of the steam works to soften and open them. When the herbs are placed in the hot water, their medicinal properties, including volatile oils, are released and carried to the surface of your skin, and to the inside of the vagina, where they are absorbed into the bloodstream and, ultimately, into to the uterus.
The medicinal herbal steam increases circulation, thins mucus, and cleanses the entire reproductive system, allowing it to shed unnecessary membranes and buildup. In doing so, we support the uterus to function at its best, thus reducing the amount of work it has to do, and therefore your discomfort.

Vaginal steaming is an age-old remedy that has been tested and approved by generations before us, and its time has come in our modern culture.

I recommend blends from Womansoul, or make your own, add crystals too if you like!

Herbs that can be used

Oregano: Used to bring on menses. Increases scanty flow. This herb is used for its antiseptic, stimulating and strengthening qualities. Oregano is a wonderful herb for aiding in prevention of infection.
Marigold: Tagetes erecta is used to induce perspiration, cleansing of the vaginal tissues. It is also healing to wounds. Calendula officinalis aids in the healing of tight scarred tissues of the labia and perenium due to episiotomy, or vaginal tear. Note: Do not steam an open wound, this could cause pain and swelling.
Basil: May reduce painful menstruation. Helps to bring on menstruation.
Mugwort: In addition to fighting infection through its antibiotic and anti-fungal properties, mugwort balances female hormones and stimulates the production of hormones that help to maintain uterine health as well as protect the uterus from things such as ulcers and tumors. Mugwort steam opens the pores, allowing the beneficial herbs to penetrate into the blood stream. In addition, mugwort helps to stimulate menstrual discharge and ease cramping.
Rosemary: An aromatic and antimicrobial herb, rosemary treats bacterial infection, speeds wound healing, inhibits yeast growth, and stimulates menstruation.
Lavender: One of the most relaxing herbs we have, lavender supports healing, and it also promotes menstrual flow.
Yarrow: Astringent, tonifying and cleansing, yarrow is great for regulating menstrual flow, treating ovarian cysts and supporting overall uterine health.
Partridge berry: Revered as a wonderful herb for the female reproductive system, partridge berry treats infertility, regulates menstrual cycles and helps decrease severe menstrual pain.
Motherwort: Astringent, tonifying and cleansing, motherwort strengthens and relaxes uterine muscles, eases uterine cramping, and may help treat uterine fibroids. Motherwort stimulates uterine tone and blood flow.
Calendula: Aids in healing of scar tissue, vaginal tears, or hemorrhoids.

Women are being Called! …Newsletter

Hello dear Sistars!

How are you all on the other side of the Equinox?

I’ve been sitting in circles of women and I keep hearing over and over the testing times we are being put through, (including myself) and I just want to hold out my arms and hold you in strength and love. Know that it’s part of the process we women have to go to in order to heal, heal our family patterns, heal our ancestral lines…by goddess it’s hard, but I completely trust that its all for the greater good of humankind and for the Earth Mother.

This weekend I was invited to host a drum making for a women’s group at my yurt and the themes arising were all about getting aligned with our truth and healing ourselves so we can do that! The women were thrilled to birth their drums as part of their journey towards stepping in to healing and truth!

(oh and don’t get me started on the “black out women” on Facebook…No, its time to step up, not black out!!)

If you’d like to hire me for your group, do get in touch!

Peri-menopause is the Calling to Yourself

Rachael CrowMenopause, Menstrual Health, Musings

Have you heard? The journey of peri-menopause is a CALLING to THE SELF…

I’ve been sitting in circles with women sharing about their rage, their insomnia, hot flushes, more rage, and they are asking how can I get though this?

Well for now, my rage has subsided. I’ve released deep grief for the things ‘I thought’ I would/should/could have been doing/done by now- by goddess women- drop the would/should/could’s!! (excerpt from The Cancer Whisperer on Grief)

I’m sitting in the ‘void’ and instead of wondering where life is taking me, I’ve stepped fully on to a path of deep healing.

For me, the initiation of wise woman, is an acceptance of my souls calling, my soul path.
When I surrendered, the Universal Assignment of my souls calling became VERY CLEAR!

I’ve had to step clear away from fear and put myself into the hand of the Great Mother, I am working with Her and she is working with me.

It’s becoming clearer to me that my rage was coming from a place of impatience, a desire to be alone, to drop all the mundane shit I no longer wanted to do, to be free-er to spend more time doing what I really wanted. And slowly (because my body started shouting at me!!) I got the message, I started to drop the stuff I no longer wanted in my life and I opened up to healing.
I’ve become clearer in my communication- asking for support, putting myself first -no, it’s not selfish- it’s ESSENTIAL in menopause that we listen to our body, our needs and goddess isn’t it time we put ourselves first for once? Things have to be on my terms.

In one circle we talked about insomnia, how do we cope- so some strategies might be to have your own room, so if your awake you can read, listen to a podcast/meditation, journal? Maybe incorporate naps in to your day, or at least more rest times. Let go of whats not important. For those of you with full time jobs- is it possible to take time off, go part time- even if just for a while? Have a holiday on your own? A weekend retreat?

If you don’t get the quiet time/alone time- how can you hear your souls calling?

Well believe me- it will start shouting in someway to get your attention- and its much easier if it doesn’t have to shout! (by the way- shouting is the rage and pain that comes).

The last few years of my life have been incredibly hard, the Universe (God, Goddess, Higher Power…insert what fits for you!) has asked me to “STEP UP” on so many levels.
The problem is, when you work in line with your soul calling, you’re required to walk your talk and heal deeper than you every thought possible!
And by Goddess, have I been worked these past few years!
My passion lies in empowering women, bringing them to the power of their wombs, its connection to the earths seasons and though that connection, I’m bringing women into love with the Mother- our Earth.
This work has included nature connection, earth connection, land protection, creating a sacred womens temple, deep womb wisdom, womb healing, ancestral healing, mother wound healing, childhood healing…and every step of the way I have healed too!
This time I’m getting it, and its deep, deeper than I ever thought possible! Healing ancestral pain, trauma, historical sickness that’s trapped in our cells, passed on – unknowingly , well I’m the “lucky” chosen one that gets to say “No more, it stops here.”

And now the universe has asked me to ramp it up…for so long I have stated my belief in plant power, food, nutrition, herbal medicine and homeopathy over vaccinations and antibiotics! So it’s time to walk my talk, step up…healer heal thyself.
And what do I need to do this-
1. A fabulous support team
2. Trust in the Universe (this includes meditating to align myself, prayers like none I’ve prayed before, surrender over and over, and staying in the vibration of love)
3. Acceptance of my ‘assignment’
4. To make it enjoyable
So, gracefully I accept my assignment, I’m doing the work, healing on more levels than I every knew, I have complete trust in the Universe and in my bodies ability to heal and the benefits have been amazing so far!

Yes, I’m stubborn (luckily) and I think that’s what will get me though this journey!

In healing myself I’m learning so many more healing techniques I will be able to share with others, I’m allowing myself to receive healing from so many different people and in so many ways, my capacity for self care and self kindness has increased 100%, my body wisdom and body listening is getting an amazing fine tuning!

Womb Packs…why they are so good!

Rachael CrowMenstrual Health, products

Ever since reading Alexandra Popes Wild Genie book, i’ve been doing castor oil packs on my womb…they are so soothing, they ease cramps and generally help you relax…but, they are so messy…oil gets everywhere, wrapping myself in cling film just feels wrong and the stains…oh no! and this is what puts women off!

So, I have created a way to make doing a womb pack much more manageable! see my video here and read on for the benefits.

Womb packs are recommended for period pains, cramps, bloating, fibroids, endometriosis, tumours, cysts, scar tissue and more! Buy yours here!

Castor oil has been shown to increase circulation and promote elimination and healing of tissues and organs underneath the skin. It is particularly effective in being absorbed into the lymph circulation which can improve digestion, immune function and reduce swelling in injured joints and extremities.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU DO A CASTOR OIL PACK?

It’s a relaxing and supportive technique to do premenstrually and up to the first day of bleeding. It can be done up to 3 time a week.

Important- if you’re trying to conceive DON’T do packs after ovulation…stick to the first 10 days of your cycle.

Why do a Womb Pack?

Increased Circulation Castor oil works by stimulating the circulatory system, bringing fresh oxygenated blood to the reproductive organs.

Boosting your Immune system. Doing a womb pack stimulates the lymphatic system around the reproductive area which support the body to remove waste products, cleanse and heal whole area.

Detoxification & Reduced Inflammation If the castor oil pack is placed over the liver as well as the womb, this can be a great way to cleanse the liver, by increasing the blood circulation to the liver this improves liver function. A functioning liver is important to eliminate waste from the body. A sluggish lymphatic system can result in ‘dis-ease and inflammation’ in the body. Fpor the womb and reproductive organs this might be ovarian cysts, fibroids, and blocked Fallopian tubes. Womb packs reduce inflammation, cysts, fibroids, tumours, period pains and generally relax you.

Stress reduction Taking time out of your day to actually lie down and do the castor oil pack can help reduce stress.  Relax and focus on yourself and your womb, take the time to meditate, connect to your womb, read a great womby book!

Lie back and relax for about 20-60 minutes!

Storage

Store your used packs in a food bag, in the fridge- DO NOT WASH! Just top up with castor oil each time you use it and replace it in the fridge afterwards. When your pack starts to smell rancid its time to replace it.

Hello Cervix

Rachael CrowMenstrual Health, Musings

Last week I was introduced to two amazing women bringing awareness to our Cervix! So let me introduce YOU to Denell at Cervical Wellness and Olivia who is part of a team at Self Cervix.

Why did I find these women… well as with all womb things- if you have any issues, your GP will invariably ask you when your last smear was…and I am a women who doesn’t smear! I was there to get some perimenopause symptoms checked out- cos yes, when your body is telling you something isn’t quite right- get it checked and then you can make an informed choice about your next steps!! (and if you have something that needs treating- I wholeheartedly recommend ALL of Susun Weeds books- she has books for Breast Health, Menopause, “Down There”- yes thats what its called!! )

So I can tell you, my GP wasn’t happy that I choose not to smear- but you know, I just don’t see myself as high risk- BUT what it did make me realise is that I don’t often think about my cervix! Who does?

So my good friend Melaine nudges me towards Self:Cervix– which is an amazing resouce about getting to really know your cervix- connecting with it- in all ways! She even talks about cervical orgasms…so if you want to know more…head over to her site!

From Oliva I found Denell at Cervical Wellness– she healed herself of HPV and cervical dysplasia…wow! I downloaded her book and read loads of interesting facts about the history of gynaecology, the cervix as a sacred portal, the different cells of the cervix and the biggest of all light bulb moment for me was finding out our cervix moves higher when we are ‘turned on’ so it’s not getting rammed during intercourse! What a clever cervix…so that pain during sex…that’s your poor cervix saying it’s not ready yet! She also has some lovely free meditations and she’s running an online workshop this week should you be interested!

From those insights I picked up my trusty Women’s Bodies Women’s Wisdom and looked up her chapter on the cervix… so you are all informed to make your own choices about smears, here’s some interesting facts- women prone to issues with their vulva, vagina, cervix are deemed as people pleasers, women who feel violated in certain relationships (personal or business), women with anxiety and irritations over being controlled by a partner or situation, women with sexual ambivalence, lower incidence of orgasm during intercourse, dislike of intercourse amounting to sexual aversion, marital conflict. Statistics showed cervical cancer was high in women whose partners where unfaithful, drinking heavily/alcoholic, and over all women who were helpless and pessimistic and lack courage to make changes- often women who had boundary issues in childhood.

Plus all of these factors make you high risk of cervical cancer- participating in unsafe sex, multiple sex partners, being overweight, use of oral contraceptives, genetics, smoking, poor immunity, psychosocial stress, multiple pregnancies and first pregnancy at a young age.

So, back to connecting with your cervix….do you know what it looks like? Perhaps you’ve imagined it opening for birth, or checked it for fertility signs? It feels a bit like the end of your nose, and has a small opening- the eye, which is more like a smile if you have give birth vaginally!

Get to know your cervix….

Images from https://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/a19977125/cervix-pictures/
and
https://www.top10homeremedies.com/news-facts/10-warning-signs-of-cervical-cancer-you-should-not-ignore.html

I had no idea these signs are warnings to heed…did you? So like I said, it’s always worth getting things checked by a doctor, but don’t get fearful, get empowered with knowledge…check out the websites i’ve mentioned and get to know your cervix: say hello, ask her if there’s anything she needs, before penetration- even of your own fingers or a yoni egg and definitely before a speculum or penis enters- ask her if she’s ready!

If you’re having a smear- talk to your cervix and let her know what’s coming, ask your doctor to wait until you are ready- ask her to warm up the speculum and the lube! You are in charge, it’s your body and you need to be ready.

Start tuning in to your cervix regularly, find your own way to do that- it might be though visualisation, touch, perhaps you might want to buy a speculum and have a look at it yourself. Get familiar with this hidden but incredibly important part of your anatomy!! Say HELLO CERVIX!!

Who needs drugs? The highs and lows of the menstrual cycle

Rachael CrowGuest Writings, Menstrual Health, Musings

Tune in and Go with the Flow!

Who needs drugs? The highs and lows of the menstrual cycle

You get 2 ex addicts together and the conversation will inevitably go back to those years of excess- but get 2 ex addicts who consciously work with their cycles and you get a whole new conversation going….

We are also 2 highly sensitive women who in the past used drugs and alcohol to numb out from the world and our emotions, but with a combination of over 30 years sobriety and over 30 years of conscious charting we have learned to ride the highs and lows of our cycles and use them to guide us through life.

We both also happen to be “Via Negativa” women so our reflections here come from a place of being more comfortable in the autumn and winter phases of our cycles….for those of you who love your spring and summer, you may have a different sense to all of this than us!

So for both of us, our inner spring can be a tricky time. For me (Rachael) it’s my ‘come down’ time from the bliss of my bleed and being in my Moon Temple. I’m gentle and tender with myself at this point, upping my self care practices as I tentatively recover from the ‘spiritual hangover’ and allow my energy to gently rise into my ovulation, inner summer time.

Then bang…surges of energy and love! The highs of summer, likened to our days of cocaine and speed taking, we can keep going and going, feeling invincible but keeping an awareness that if we keep going for too long, riding the wave of the hormones then the crash will come.

And there it is, the come down in to inner autumn, now for many this is a tricky time, but I just love it. I consciously slow down, spending more time in nature, just sitting, connecting to the earth….I would perhaps liken this phase to my “stoner days” when life was almost in slow motion and I need the world to slow down too!

Then…I sink into the void…I used to really struggle with the ‘nothingness’ of the void- this was the point in my cycle where I would act out self sabotage- binging on drugs, alcohol, food, shopping….this point is a big red light when relapses tend to happen for women in recovery. But now I can enjoy the stillness of the void, finding my groove in the ‘comfortably numb’ place….similar to the effect of opiates…allowing it to take you over as you slip in to the bliss of your bleed. At this point I am raw and wide open, acutely sensitive so need to really protect myself! As a body therapist I used to LOVE giving treatments during my moon time, I could literally merge with my clients and work much deeper with them than at any other time in my cycle, but boy did I come home drained and feeling energetically “icky”. Then I had to work super hard to cleanse myself and come back to Me.

These days I know I need time alone at this point, if I can let go of the outside world and the day to day tasks, I can drop into an altered state, not dissimilar to the experiences I’ve had on hallucinogens, and even drugs like ecstasy. I am open to receive clear guidance from the earth, spirit animals and guides and fall into a state of bliss for a few days!

And so we’ve cycled around our inner seasons without the use of mind and body altering substances….we’ve had the highs of amphetamines, the slowed down states of cannabis and opiates, moved into the loved up bliss and visions of hallucinogens and ecstasy! Our holy hormones take us on an amazing ride if we choose to take the time to tune in and go with the flow.

I can remember a time, camping with friends in my late teens, sitting watching the sun set- whilst high on magic mushrooms and having a conversation about how we knew- we just knew- that our bodies had the ability to reach these altered states without the use of drugs…and I know one of those friends became a meditator and teacher of mindfulness and meditation, and one of them is still locked in the addiction of drugs…and me…well I’m just using the power of my cycle!

Amber…

Like Rachael I also have a history of drug and alcohol addiction in my teens and early 20’s. It wasn’t until my 30’s I came into the awareness that my body was flowing in a natural cycle and rhythm each month. At the time this realisation, and the fact that it had been hidden from me for so many years, was like the world had been opened up in a whole new way.

As I began to create space, allow and honour the different energies I was moving through naturally each month, I began to recognise the echoes of the drugs I used to reach for in my life. The feeling of timelessness and expansion where I could do and be it all at ovulation, the feeling of love and ecstasy inherent in my body just before I bled or under a full moon, and the beautiful power of oxytocin as though being held in a Mothers arms if I created space and rested when I bled. My truly embodied experience so much more powerful and fulfilling than those synthetic echoes.

I slowly came to understand that all along there was a deeper truth calling to me. To experience feelings of bliss, expanded consciousness and ecstasy were part of my birthrite as a woman, along with so much more available to us when we chose to honour our deep feminine wisdom. It had just never been explained or modelled for me, so I was searching for this connection in the way I had learned from my culture…seeking it from outside of myself as I hadn’t been given the tools or initiation I needed to connect with it from within.

And like Rachael shares, coming to understand this wonderful container of our menstruality we are held within is such an empowering tool to work with on the path of recovery. When you are in your menstruating years it can support you to understand, have compassion, and prepare for those those times in your month when you know you are going to be more vulnerable to reaching for something to numb the pain.

For girls the restoration of mentoring and initiation to create a strong foundation as they move through menarche can make all the difference as the sense of being held may just keep them from acting out destructively during this powerful and confusing time.

I haven’t even touched in these paragraphs on the ‘acceptable’ medicating of birth, death, menopause and menstruation so inherently creating addictive patterns in our culture. It’s a reality almost too huge to contemplate. So for today I will offer thanks for my own recovery from drugs and alcohol. I also offer deep gratitude for the beauty and holding of my own womanhood, and trust that this little drop will become part of the ocean of change we are creating.

Hello Beautiful Sisters,

Gosh it’s been a full couple of weeks here at Moon Times HQ! Firstly, thank you to all of you who came to the Pagan Fair in Bristol, it was so lovely to see you….and an extra bonus was catching up with my old mates from the area!

We had our red tent circle outdoors at my house last week, with was so lovely. We had our usual sharing circle, drumming, singing and  finishing with a fire ceremony. There’s something just so special about sitting in circle with sisters. Tomorrow is of course Summer Solstice, so I’ve been doing a cleanse – bodily and a house cleanse…I found 26 odd socks…where do they all go??  To me, Summer Solstice is a time to honour the sun and fire….what do you do to connect to the energy? Some ideas for you…perhaps visit a sacred stone circle, sit alone with a fire, ponder your relationships- do they still have ‘fire’- often handfasts are renewed at this time! Or maybe just sun bathe!

Melanie Swan interviewed me about my Broken Basket Woman teachings …if you’re curious to know more…have a watch!
