Dear Aunt Flo

My daughter has had her moon time for a year or so now, but experiences such pain she vomits. Do you have any suggestions to help her ease this?

Dear Lou, I am so sorry to hear about your daughter, what an awful experience of her moontime.

Firstly lets address the pain issue- in Chinese medicine pain is usually a sign of stagnation and it is that which is causing rebellious stomach chi.  A woman’s normal cycle is one spent making blood in the month and then loosing blood. So anything that disrupts that cycle can cause problems.

What is her diet like? If the body hasn’t got enough good quality blood– menstruation can be very challenging. Also other things that can cause stagnation are emotions and stress.

Shiatsu, acupuncture, flower essences and homeopathy which all address the emotional side of things should help things flow a bit easier by balancing both hormones & feelings.

Dehydration can cause period pain, drinking extra fluids in the 2-3 days before your moontime helps enormously.

But diet is a big one too; sugar and caffeine can wreak havoc with a menstruation cycle.

Warm bath in epsom salt or mix 1tsp epsom salt in warm water and drink slowly, or take magnesium, hot water bottle, vitamin c, lemon and honey tea, finding ways to de-stress.

She could also try the pelvic rock exercise

A high dose (500mg daily) calcium & magnesium supplement (ideally taken pre-menses but start now) hot baths or compress on the womb area with chamomile tea and lavender essential oil. Pulsatilla 30c . Raspberry leaf, Mugwort, Yarrow, Valerian, Black Cohosh, Cramp Bark – in whatever form you can find from health food shop.

Seeing a homeopath may help- they will discuss diet and other aspects of her life. So much going on for young people. Tampons, parabens, junk/processed foods, dehydration and stress impact on health especially fertility health.
