Pads
Moon Time Teas

Moon Times®  Organic Cloth Pads are the soft and comfortable alternative to disposable pads! Hand made from breathable organic fair-trade cotton, leaving you feeling confident & fresh. Suitable for all women of all ages but especially make an ideal gift for young women new to their menses and for new mothers who need soft cloth against their delicate tissue after giving birth. They can also be used by women who suffer from slight incontinence.

How do they work? Inserts (small liner) go inside the pocket of the pad (or a few if you are bleeding heavily) choosing organic fair-trade cotton, hemp or towelling inserts. The whole pad (including inserts) gets changed when you need a fresh pad. For more information see our Frequently Asked Questions page!

Moon Times® pads are made with organic fair-trade flannelette and organic fair-trade. Inserts are available in organic fair-trade cotton, hemp and towelling for extra absorbency. Flannelette is both soft and absorbent and used as the ‘top’ layer- next to your skin.

There are 2 types of Moon Times®  pads- 100% organic & the patterned pads. All pads & panty liners have an organic fair-trade cotton underside. You put an ‘insert’ (a small liner) inside the pocket of the pad (or a few if you are bleeding heavily) choosing cotton, hemp or towelling inserts. Pads have wings and fasten easily with press studs so they are very secure! There are a few colour themes- plain organic (white or naturally dyed colours), dark colours** and patterned* (*prints of flowers, butterflies, animal prints, rabbits, teddies etc dependant on what is available) ** The top fabric on the red/dark and patterned flannelette pads are not organic.

Pads can be bought singularly, or in sets. We also have larger belted pads that are great for after birth and night time use.

Organic Pads: the ‘top’ layer is soft organic fair-trade cotton flannelette and the underside is plain organic fair-trade cotton. These pads are undyed or dyed pretty colours.

Patterned pads: are non organic cotton flannelette on top and organic cotton on the underside. Patterns vary from jumping rabbits, to kisses, moons, stars and bright colours depending on what is available.

Not using enough inserts is usually the cause of leaking, so use more inserts; 1 or 2 is suitable for light to med flow, 2 -4 for medium to heavy. Towelling inserts are the most absorbent.

Moon Times® Cloth Panty Liners are for the lighter days at each end of your moontime, and are suitable for slight incontinence. Patterned and Organic panty liners are made from soft flannelette with a sandwich of thin towelling inside and an organic fair-trade cotton underside. They fasten quickly and easily with a press stud! Colours vary.

Moon Times® Incontinence Pads Urinary incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine – a common problem that can affect both sexes but women are more commonly affected when coughing, laughing, sneezing or doing physical exercise. Stress incontinence is usually the result of weakening of the muscles in the pelvic floor that surround the bladder. This often happens during pregnancy, following childbirth or after the menopause. Moon Times® Cloth Pads offer an alternative to the ‘disposable’ incontinence pads that are on the market. 1 cloth pad pocket with a towelling insert is sufficient for small amounts of leakage. For more protection some women choose the thicker towelling insert – 2 layers of towelling with a waterproof backing. Sets of 4 pads are available.

Moon Times® Belted Pads (Post Partum/Nigh Time Pads) Perfect for new mums who need soft cloth against their delicate tissue after birth or for night time use. These pads are designed for heavy flow and night time use- and can be worn without knickers! Pads have a ‘pocket’ design which holds an extra long towelling insert. The pad is held in place with a belt.

Moon Times® Post Partum Pads are great for mums after birth, especially if you have had stitches! We recommend spraying pads with some water and a few drops of soothing essential oils added (lavender, chamomile, calendula or rose) and putting pads in the freezer before use- a cool pad against swollen delicate skin is very soothing. Moon Times® recommend Welcome World Perineum Wash for after birth…see http://www.welcomeworldcafe.com/herbalteas.php#

If you are using cloth pads in hospital you will need your partner/friend to take your pads home & wash. Make sure you have enough as you can bleed heavily after birth & use as many as 4-6 pads a day in the first few days. Be sure to have some spare pads as a back up. There are 3 types of belted pads – 100% organic, (undyed, or dyed) or patterned and plain non organic pads.

Pads are easy to use and easy to wash-:

• Thread the belt through the hoops and wear under your PJ’s for a comfy, leak free sleep.

• Remove insert and soak with pad in cold water until you are ready to wash-change water daily, use water to feed your plants!

• Machine or hand wash in an eco washing detergent. Then machine or sun dry • If you prefer to wash pads separate from your main wash- just wash first on the ‘pre- wash cycle’ before adding your other clothes!

• When away from home carry a make up bag for used pads and soak as soon as possible.

When you first use Moon Times® , it may seem as if your flow is heavier or even lighter than usual- this is natural- I believe that some of the chemicals used in other sanitary products can affect the amount we bleed-also we may not be used to seeing our blood that closely!

Moon Times®  are the only manufactures of hand made organic fair-trade washable pads in the UK. Since Moon Times®  Pads & Panty Liners are lovingly hand made rather than churned out in a factory, each one is unique – slight irregularities are characteristic of this!

Moon Times® Moon Sponges are the environmentally friendly and comfortable alternative to ‘disposable’ tampons! Moon Sponges are natural (unbleached) sea sponge that you can use instead of a tampon. Women have used sponges as tampons for thousands of years!
Please note that for hygiene reasons we cannot exchange/refund Menstrual Sponges.

Moon Sponges for Prolapse: For many women Moon Sponges are a natural alternative to the pessary, easy to insert and clean, comfortable, and inexpensive. These prolapse sponges are specifically larger sized than our Moon Sponge Tampons providing you the reassurance you need. FFI about dealing with prolapses see http://www.wholewoman.com

Frequently Asked Questions:
Is it environmentally friendly to use sponge? Moon Sponges have been picked individually from the Mediterranean Ocean so that the ocean beds continue to restock themselves. The divers who collect the sponges are careful to ensure that the roots of the sponge remain intact so as the sponge can regenerate. They have been farming sponges for generations and if they over pick them they will lose their livelihood.
They are UNBLEACHED hence the natural brown colour instead of yellow.
Traditional tampons are easy and convenient. Traditional tampons take about 6 months to biodegrade and love to block up our plumbing! Health wise, the bleaches used in tampons have links with cervical cancer and they are responsible for Toxic Shock Syndrome.
It’s not sterile. Neither is a traditional tampon, or your hands, or your vagina! By selling disposable tampons in a plastic wrapper it lets us believe its sterile- but its not!
How do you reuse it? Method 1; pull out your Moon Sponge & rinse it under the tap/ or take a water bottle in to the toilet with you to rise it. Method 2; put the full sponge into the specially provided bag to wash later & insert a clean one.
How long do they last? With care a Moon Sponge can last a year. Using 4 or 5 tampons a day over 4 days on average equals a pack of 20 costing around £2. A pair of Moon Sponges cost £8-9, so they could pay back their cost in 4 months, Eventually your Moon Sponge will lose some of it’s bounce & become less absorbent, that is when it is time replace it.
Do they come in different sizes? Yes, you can buy smaller sized Moon Sponges; these sponges are for light flow days, young women or pre- birth.
Or our larger Prolapse Sponges- For many women Moon Sponges are a natural alternative to the pessary, easy to insert and clean, comfortable, and inexpensive, also some of our customers have reported finding these useful in the months after childbirth when conventional tampons and menstrual cups may not feel as comfortable.
Our standard Moon Sponges are big enough for you to trim them back if you need to. You can put them in sideways or lengthways depending on the shape of your insides, they should not be uncomfortable when they are in.
I have really heavy periods! You can use 2 Moon Sponges at once-one higher and one lower. How long can I keep a Moon Sponge in for? Wear for no longer than 6 hours – we don't recommend use overnight- for night time use cloth pads- It is recommend you change your Moon Sponge every 3-4hrs.
I was wondering if I can go swimming while using a Moon Sponge? What about menstrual blood in the sea or a lake? You may use your sponge while swimming. The sponge will prevent any bacteria in the water from entering your vagina. We don’t see any problem with your menstrual blood in the sea or a lake when you consider the millions of other organisms already in there! However, we would suggest that you use one of our disinfecting methods for your sponge after swimming in the sea or a lake. Have fun!
Are there any health risks with a Moon Sponge? According to www.tamponalert.org.uk the charity that exposes the dangers of Toxic Shock Syndrome and they said “We have no evidence of sponges causing TSS. All known cases of menstrual TSS have been in association with tampons containing man-made fibre, and in recent years this means RAYON.”
Rinsing and Storage: Never use harsh soap on your Moon Sponge. It leaves a film that upsets the natural PH balance of your vagina. You may boil your sponge for about 2 minutes if you wish, however, we do not recommend it because it shrinks and toughens your Moon Sponge, and also shortens its useful lifetime. We have no scientific evidence, but it is a fact that micro waving changes the molecular structure of matter, so we would not recommend it.
When you are on your Moon Time, you just need to rinse your sponge in water and re-insert it (sometimes you may find yourself 'caught short' in a public toilet with no where to rinse- so just give it a squeeze, wipe your hands on some toilet roll and re-insert! Ideally have a bottle of water in your bag or a 'ready to use' wet sponge in a wash bag)

Between cycles, there are several ways to disinfect Moon Sponges. You may soak them in any of these mixtures:
1.A solution of 1 or 2 drops of tea tree oil and 1 cup warm water (tea tree oil has been shown to inhibit 60 strains of bacteria, including s. aureus)
2. A solution of 1 tbsp. cider vinegar in 1 cup of water
3. A solution of 1 tbsp. baking soda in 1 cup of warm water.
4. A solution of 1 tsp. Colloidal Silver to 1 cup warm water. There is not a pathogenic organism known that is not killed by Colloidal Silver in six minutes or less. Its use is also of benefit to women who suffer from recurrent Candida (yeast) infections.
5. Air drying between cycles (preferably in natural sunlight) really is sufficient. Remember to always keep an extra Moon Sponge on hand during your cycle incase rinsing isn’t convenient!
Can I use my sponge during sex? Yes! and even use it as a form of contraception- see our Blog article.

The Jam Sponges and Jam Rags have attitude! It's a natural unbleached Sea Sponge that is used internally in place of a tampon.  Jam Rags- red and black cloth pads!

Menstrual Cups are an alternative to tampons. The Mooncup and Diva Cup are reusable menstrual cups, worn internally they hold the blood until you need to empty it- we recommend emptying each time you use the loo!
Please note that for hygiene reasons we cannot exchange/refund Menstrual Cups.
How to choose the right size? It’s a personal thing! Some women try several brands before settling on the “right” size. The ages mentioned by the manufacturers are only to be used as a guide. Generally, if you have had children then you should be looking at the larger size, unless they were born by caesarean section in which case the vagina would still be as if you hadn't had children and you may need the smaller size, depending on your age! I know it is confusing. Please bear in mind that due to the personal nature of these products, if you buy one and it doesn't fit you cannot return it!!

What material are they made from? All of the menstrual cups on the website are made from silicone . Individual Cup Descriptions:
The Mooncup is a reusable menstrual cup made from soft silicone rubber. It is worn internally like a tampon but collects menstrual fluid rather than absorbing. Unlike tampons they are not a disposable product, so you only need to buy one! Be sure to choose the correct size. The Mooncup will hold 30ml of fluid, which is roughly one third of the average total produced each period. A light seal is formed with your vaginal walls allowing your menstrual fluid to pass into the Mooncup without leakage or odour. You will probably find that you need to empty your Mooncup less frequently than you currently replace towels or tampons.
Mooncup Sizes: Size A is recommended for women who have given birth vaginally or who have had a caesarean section and are aged 30 or above. Size B is recommended for women who have not given birth or who have had a caesarean section and are aged below 30.
Please ensure that you select the correct size. For hygiene reasons we cannot exchange these products. Please note that women over the age of 30 years old are increasingly likely to need the larger size regardless of giving birth. This is because the tone of vaginal and pelvic floor muscles naturally reduces with age but to varying degrees in different women. Some activities will maintain tone, such as yoga, pilates, dance, so if you are advanced in any these, or similar activities take this into consideration when choosing which size you need.
